A company that specialises in delivering forged products has submitted plans for a new press and forge on an derelict business park in Sheffield.
The Star reported that Abbey Forged Products hopes to establish its new facility alongside a new biomass power plant that would provide the bulk of the energy required for the company’s operations.
In addition, an anaerobic digestion plant is also being proposed at the site, allowing all the businesses that decide to move to this new development to operate using sustainable power.
Although the scheme has yet to be given the green light, landowners at the site AMG Investments are excited at the prospect of creating a sustainable industries park on the outskirts of Sheffield, a city renowned for its manufacturing heritage.
It is hoped that the development would create 72 jobs, as well as safeguarding a further 32 positions, and provide a blueprint for how other industrial parks could transform themselves to make use of sustainable energy sources.
The agent for the landowner AMG Investments’ Mark Leivers explained that the power produced by the new power station would probably be utilised solely by the forge.
“Abbey Forged will probably take all that we can produce 95 per cent of the time. It’s sustainably sourced and cheaper,” he explained.
As well as having power for its operations, Abbey Forged Products will also need to source the right chemicals and raw materials for its forging activities.
Many businesses are investing in Sheffield, with McLaren Automotive announcing plans earlier this year for a new research and production facility, which will employ 200 people and bring £100 million to the local economy over the next decade.
