While there is a clear appetite for electric vehicles and a raw material supply chain robust enough to meet demand, innovative designers actually attempted to create a 2026 world four decades before this!
In August 2026, battery-powered electric cars were the most popular type of new vehicle sold on the UK market, culminating in an astonishing rise in demand and supply of high-quality, practical, affordable electric vehicles.
This is an astonishing turnaround for a nation that historically associated EVs with the electric milk float, the Scottish Aviation Scamp and the Sinclair C5.
The latter is particularly important, as it was the closest Britain came to an electric transportation future before the modern era of the EV, but also arguably the reason this remarkable future did not ultimately come to pass.
Why was this? Is there a chance it could have worked? And how would this have changed Great Britain as we know it?
What Was The Sinclair C5?
The ultimate ambition of Sir Clive Sinclair, the Sinclair C5 was astonishingly close to being the electric transportation vehicle of the future, but its design and construction would ultimately let it down.
The idea was revolutionary; the C5 could be operated by anyone over the age of 14 without a helmet or driving license, and could travel up to 20 miles on one charge at a speed of up to 14 miles per hour.
The belief in the C5 lasted up until its unveiling in January 1985, when a winter road test could not have gone worse, with multiple failures and design defects being revealed right before it went on sale.
Why Did The Sinclair C5 Fail?
The Sinclair C5 failed partly because of a disastrous launch, partly due to a few notable design oversights, but mostly because it was poorly marketed by a company far more at home with computers than vehicles.
Sinclair was, at the time, best known for the ZX Spectrum, an astonishingly cheap computer that millions of children owned and coded on. This ultimately did not translate to the world of serious cars, and the C5 was treated as, at best, a novelty.
The launch event showed how poorly an open-top electric tricycle could work in cold, wet, hilly Britain, as several vehicles, including one driven by the Formula 1 legend Sir Stirling Moss, ground to a halt.
As well as this, its tiny size and low ground clearance meant that it was hard for other road users to see, ultimately leading to the car being sold with a reflective mast as standard.
The British Safety Council was utterly damning, to the point that Sir Clive would unsuccessfully sue it and its chairman, James Tye, for defamation.
Could The Sinclair C5 Have Succeeded?
Given its cult status and eternal fascination, there is a chance that the Sinclair C5 could have succeeded. Some analysts have called it ahead of its time, whilst others have gone as far as to claim that it could have actually succeeded.
A modern version of the C5 with lithium-ion batteries rather than the lead-acid 12V car batteries used in the original would have been far faster and longer-lasting, but even in 1985, it could be argued that the Sinclair C5 was a failure of marketing rather than engineering.
It did ultimately sell; the young Princes William and Harry had one each, Sir Elton John had two, and other famous owners included Sir Arthur C. Clarke (best known for writing 2001: A Space Odyssey) and the late Paul Daniels (who presumably paid “not a lot, not a lot” for it).
The problem was that it was a brilliant invention that had no understanding of the market it should be sold within.
Had the Alexandra Palace launch event not happened, or at least been moved to late spring and to a convention centre without so many surrounding hills, that would have helped perception significantly in the early stages.
The irony of the C5 is that several investors who bought job lots of C5s at bankruptcy auctions managed to sell them for over six times their initial £399 retail price, and the collectors’ market has only surged since.
How Would The Future Of EVs Have Changed Had The Sinclair C5 Succeeded?
Sir Clive Sinclair noted that the plan for the C5 was to use it as a proof of concept before creating much more car-like successors in the Sinclair C10 and C15.
Had they also succeeded, it would have fundamentally changed motoring in Great Britain, and potentially the world, filling the gap between the ambitious EVs of the 1970s and the sad saga of the EV1 in the 1990s, and potentially kick-starting an EV revolution two or three decades earlier.
