UK chemical company Ineos has promised to produce one million bottles of hand sanitiser per month by opening up new factories across Europe.

As many people in the country are short of hand gels due to some customers stockpiling the product before coronavirus took hold in the UK, it is imperative more products are manufactured to ensure the protection of as many people as possible.

Ineos is well-known for producing isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol, which are key raw materials for use in manufacturing hand sanitisers. It is, therefore, making sure it is continuing to produce these and sending them for medical use.

In addition to this, it committed itself to building four new factories, including one in the UK, to manufacture hand sanitiser itself from the materials. The firm hopes it will be able to produce one million bottles per month from these sites, which it will send to hospitals, workplaces, pharmacies, supermarkets, and schools.

Founder and chairman of the company Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: “It is becoming increasingly clear that hand to mouth infection is a significant cause of coronavirus contagion and Ineos is Europe’s largest manufacturer of the core ingredient of hand sanitiser.”

It successfully built the Middlesbrough plant in ten days and has begun production of the sanitisers, with Mr Ratcliffe saying he is hopeful the gels will be delivered to hospitals, surgeries and homes “within a few days”.
