As cannabis legislation spreads throughout the U.S. and North America, there has been a growth in the number of unique businesses entering the industry. One main innovation is the legal sale of cannabidiol (CBD) which appears in many forms. Toll processing has become a major factor in the extraction of CBD from the hemp biomass harvest.
Unlike many other compounds associated with cannabis, the CBD found in hemp doesn’t deliver a high, and is used with the intent of treating an array of medical conditions. CBD products are becoming more widely available around the world in many forms, from edibles, vapes, and prescription drugs.
When it comes to CBD oil, solid-liquid separation processes come in to play. While there are many methods for botanical extraction, it is mostly a filtration process being employed for extracting the CBD oil from hemp.
In a recent joint announcement between U.S. company Thar Process Inc., and Calgary, Canada based 51st Parallel Inc., a joint venture between the two companies was revealed, the creation of Canada’s largest cannaboid-based toll processing facility, using a CO2 extraction method.
This involves taking advantage of the differing solubility of waxes and cannaboids below freezing point, allowing the frozen high CBD content wax to be stripped from the hemp, which is then separated from the solvent using press filtration.
Meanwhile California Gold Mining Inc. (CGM) have announced an agreement with a North Carolina toll processing facility to take on the CGM owned hemp harvest in Illinois, with purchased of similar harvests in Virginia and North Carolina.
