The world’s first clean gas energy plant is due to be constructed in Teesside. A consortium of six global energy giants is behind the project, which would see the CO2 emissions generated by the finished plant captured and stored.
Teesside Live shared the plans for the Clean Gas Project, which would see the carbon stored via pipes under the North Sea.
According to the news provider, the proposed plant would be constructed at the South Tees Development Corporation.
In addition to delivering clean energy, the hope is that this project will lead to other developments within the carbon capture sector. The infrastructure that would be created for this plant could enable wider industry in the Teesside industry to benefit from carbon capture storage.
It’s hoped that it would also lead to more companies setting up bases in the area to explore how to convert the waste gas into more useful chemicals.
Ben Houchen, Tees Valley mayor, said: “This multi-billion pound energy project will pave the way for our region to become the clean energy powerhouse of the UK, creating and safeguarding thousands of jobs.”
Earlier this year, an article for Chemistry World highlighted just how important developing carbon capture and storage is. It revealed that it’s estimated 40 per cent of CO2 emissions come from fossil fuel power plants.toll processing
The news provider pointed out that capturing and using the gas is a viable alternative to storage that’s already being explored. It can be used to create petrochemicals, for instance, as well as other commercial chemical products.
