The world has a plastic problem. Too much of the material is ending up in our environment, and recently microplastics were even found in humans for the first time. There’s a growing movement to curtail our use of the material, but what should we do with what we already have?
According to Let’s Recycle, there are a growing number of companies exploring the possibility of recycling plastics into oil.
Now one company has announced its intention to set up operations in the UK. Plastic Energy, which already has two plants in Spain, has now set up a headquarters in Stratford, with the intention of expanding across Europe.
It explained that it uses unique Thermal Anaerobic Technology (TAC) in its recycling process, which produces TACOIL. This product is suitable for use in the manufacturing of food-safe plastics.
The company also claims it’s the “only operator in the world to have successfully converted domestic end-of-life plastic continuously at a commercial level”. Said Carlos Monreal, the business’ co-founder, told the news provider that setting up a base in the UK would help it set up operations over here.
“We are keen to build industrial plants in the UK as part of our organic growth to help solve the problem of plastic waste here,” he asserted.
Earlier this year, Eunomia revealed that the UK is overestimating how much plastic packaging waste is being recycled in the country, with the organisation reporting that the UK overestimates its recycling rates by one-third.
