Oaklands College in Welwyn Garden City has opened a new welding training centre, where the engineers of tomorrow can hone their skills in virtual and hands-on training environments.
According to the Welwyn Hatfield Times, the new centre will provide support for the college’s engineering students, as well as being crucial to its new welding apprenticeships.
Within the centre is a dedicated welding training suite home to six welding bays all fitted with industry-standard equipment. There is also a complete virtual learning environment which makes use of fully-immersive virtual welding equipment.
Funding for the new facilities was provided by the charity Weldability Sif Foundation, which is supported by firms in the industry, with further money coming from the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
Zoe Hancock, principal and chief executive of Oaklands College, said they were proud to be able to provide youngsters with a hands-on training facility that will equip them with the skills they need in this sector.
She added: “By partnering with sector-led foundation like Weldability Sif, we can provide state-of-the-art facilities and, in time, skilled professional welders who provide such a vital role to the wider economy.”
Weldability Sif Foundation was established in 2012 with the specific purpose of improving the number and range of vocational training in welding. So far, it has supported more than 30 institutions and enabled 4,000 students to gain qualifications in this discipline.
