Grangemouth is at the heart of the chemicals industry in Scotland and now a new report has been published sharing a vision of a sustainable future for the area.

Chemical Sciences Scotland (CSS), Scottish Enterprise and Falkirk Council have all worked on the plan, which sets out how they would like to see Grangemouth developed over the next decade.

The document includes proposals for greater collaboration between industry and government, achieving Smart City status for Grangemouth, and improvements to the road and rail infrastructure at Grangemouth Port.

Acting chair of CSS Tom Shields described Grangemouth as a “globally competitive manufacturing cluster”, adding that it’s important to “develop these plans to ensure a sustainable future for the hub as well as develop and maximise the opportunity it offers to both Scotland and the UK”.

Scottish government minister for business, innovation and energy Paul Wheelhouse noted that the chemicals industry in this area of Scotland has the ability to become a global leader in the field, which will in turn support innovation in a number of other sectors, including energy, automotive, aerospace and life sciences.

Meanwhile, an Ipsos Mori poll published at the end of last month revealed that scientists are some of the most trustworthy professionals. 83 per cent of the public stated that they’d trust scientists, who came fifth in the list.

At the top were nurses, followed by doctors, teachers and professors. Politicians and government ministers took up the two bottom spots in the survey.
