Potassium carbonate is the inorganic compound with the formula K₂CO₃. It is a white salt, which is soluble in water and forms a strongly alkaline solution. It is deliquescent, often appearing as a damp or wet solid.
Available in anhydrous dense granular, granular food grade and solution, potassium carbonate is primarily used for the manufacturing of soap and glass, but it also has applications in chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, ceramics and water treatment.
You may also hear it referred to as potash carbonate and the chemical itself boasts exothermic properties, so it’s often a feature in de-icing solutions, as well.
The food and beverage industry also makes excellent use of potassium carbonate as an additive, utilising it for flavour enhancement and seasoning, as well as reducing the acidity levels in wine.
Other key industries for potassium carbonate application include:
– Mining
– Agriculture
– Construction
– Forestry and fishing
– Recorded media reproduction
