President-elect of the USA Donald Trump is overhauling his administration team and wants to use the expertise of Andrew N Liveris, chief executive officer of Dow Chemical.

He has appointed Liveris to the head of the American Manufacturing Council in an attempt to boost the country’s manufacturing sector and “bring industry back to America”, the Chemical & Engineering News revealed.

Trump made the announcement at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, last week, where he discussed the drop in the number of manufacturing jobs in the US following the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement and letting China join the World Trade Organisation.

Liveris also spoke at the rally, telling the crowds that Trump is “paving the way with your administration, with your policies, to make it easier to do business in this country – not a red tape country, but a red carpet country”.

Dow Chemical also announced its investment in an innovation centre in Midland, Michigan. This will provide support to 200 research and development jobs.

The centre will combine new and existing chemical technologies, and focus on creating new products, boosting energy-saving building technologies, advancing materials, and helping to build hybrid and electric motors.

Liveris said the firm wants to invent products that will “define the solutions of tomorrow” and create them in the USA.

Trump plans to help boost chemical manufacturing in the country by pledging to cut corporate taxes from 35 to 15 per cent. He also committed to lowering regulations to 85 per cent from 80 per cent.
